Welcome to my website. My name is Martin Burridge. I am a psychological therapist who specialises in the treatment of phobias and anxiety disorders.
I predominantly use Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) which is the psychological therapy recommended by the National Institute of Clinical Excellence (NICE) for the treatment of anxiety disorders. There is empirical evidence that CBT is the most effective treatment for Panic Disorder, Generalised Anxiety Disorder, Social Anxiety Disorder, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder and Phobias.
I am also trained in Hypnotherapy and sometimes use this for simple phobias and short term anxiety problems like public speaking, exam or driving test nerves.
If you would like to make an appointment for therapy, please call me on 01633 891597. The best time to reach me is evenings and weekends.
My website contains useful information on a range of anxiety disorders. It also explains the therapies I use. The FAQ page is a particularly useful page which explains CBT and Hypnotherapy (which is unrelated to but often confused with stage hypnosis)
NICE are an organisation who provide guidance to the NHS.
What Does Therapy Involve?
An important part of therapy is education. I will teach you what causes anxiety, what makes it worse and what makes it better. Together we will identify the negative thoughts and beliefs that drive the anxiety and then you will learn how to think in a healthier and more positive way. I will also teach you simple relaxation techniques to help reduce the anxiety. In some cases I will provide you with relaxation recordings customised to your needs.
Occasionally if appropriate, I use clinical hypnosis which is just focused attention and relaxation. Hypnosis will always be explained to the client and will only be used with the clients agreement beforehand.
